We have a problem on our streets and alleys with litter, illegally dumped rubbish and fly-tipping.
Pieces of litter dropped in the street: a child's sweet wrapper, an adult's empty cigarette box, someone's takeaway food container, a student's Coke can, some of the many menus and adverts that get posted through our doors, a car or taxi-driver emptying rubbish onto the pavement. Post Office rubber bands. Some of this is done by people passing through and when we see it happen we should try to challenge it. But some of it is being done by US and we need to change our behaviour and give a better example to our children.
Bags of rubbish left in alleys. We have to sort out re-cycleable items (paper & card, plastic bottles & metal cans, food) and put them in the bins provided by the Council. Anything else goes in black bags and into the black bin, also provided by the Council. So why do some people just put everything in black binbags and leave them in the alley? It could be...
Lack of education: Someone may not know about re-cycling or bin collection, and may genuinely think this is what you do with your rubbish. Or maybe it is just too confusing working out which bins to put out each week.
Laziness: All this re-cycling and bin collection... is it just too much bother for some?
Dumping rubbish is illegal and against most tenancy agreements. It can lead to a hefty fine or worse.
Fly-tipping: Mattresses, bits of furniture, fridges. Pretty much always done at night, which suggests that the people who do this know it's wrong.
